  • Time: 9:00am - 10:00am


Monday, August 26th

  • Math “Boot” Camp begins (ends Friday, September 13th)
  • For Econ Ph.D. and approved Bren Ph.D.- EES students only
  • Location: North Hall 2111
  • Time: 10:​00am – 11:30am, 1:00pm – 2:30pm (with a break for lunch time included)
  • During the morning of the first day of Math Camp, we will have a short Ph.D. orientation starting at 9:00am (see above)


Wednesday, August ​28th
and Thursday, August 29th​

  • New Economics Ph.D. Students have professional photo taken.
  • Location: Kerr Hall 1120
  • Time: Between 1:00pm and 4:00pm

  • ​Teaching Assistant English Language Placement Examination (TA ELPE)
    • Oral exam ​Required for all new international Ph.D. students to certify you for sole classroom instruction.

Wednesday, September 18th

  • Cultural Awareness, Laws and Immigration Training (C.A.L.I.), hosted by the UCSB Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) - following the ELPE.
    • Attendance is Mandatory for all new International Graduate Students
    • Location: Corwin Pavilion
    • You will also completed your new student check-in during CALI training. Please bring the following documents with you to the CALI training
      1. Your completed check-in form
      2. Your I-20 or DS 2019 document
      3. Passport (with F-1 or J-1 visa)

Sunday, September 22nd

  • Fall quarter Officially Begins

  • New Graduate Student Orientation hosted by the UCSB Graduate Division
    • Location: Campbell Hall
    • Time: 10:00am - 1:00pm
      • The program includes presentations from key campus representatives, a luncheon, and Resource Fair. ​Check out the Digital Resource Packet for information and resources from organizations that will be tabling at our Resource Fair, as well as other campus entities that new grad students should be aware of. .  

Thursday, September 26th

  •  Fall Quarter Instruction Begins
    • Graduate fee payment deadline for “Amount Due” charges for Fall ​2019 Registration Fees. Graduate students who still have a balance due must pay or defer this balance by 4 p.m., to avoid a $50 late payment fee.
    • Students can view their BARC account balances at https://mybarc.ucsb.edu . Graduate students who are not paid will not be allowed to continue with registration until fee payment is made. Fellowship payout begins approximately one week prior to the start of classes. Graduate students who are not paid will not be allowed to continue with registration until fee payment is made.
